Recommendations for pen blanks
* For acrylic blanks:
An acrylic drill bit is the best tool for the job. Its specialized design is made to slice cleanly through brittle plastics, preventing the cracking and "tear-out" that can ruin a blank.
* For resin blanks:
A brad point bit is an excellent option for resin, as its central point ensures accurate and clean entry into the material. A standard twist bit can also work, as resin is a softer material, but use it with a slow speed and light pressure.
* For both acrylic and resin:
If you only want to buy one type of bit, you can use a high-speed steel (HSS) twist drill, provided you modify its tip. Regrinding the tip to a steeper angle (60°-90°) and creating a flat, or "dubbed," cutting edge will allow it to scrape the plastic instead of grabbing and cracking it. Even with a modified bit, always use slow speeds and peck-drill to prevent melting and chip buildup.
