National Wood Expo May 2026

Date: 02-02-2026

This year the Wood Expo will have 2 International and 3 National demonstrators sharing their expertise and techniques with you.

Troy Grimwood (Taupo) will introduce us to box turning without specialised tools.

Andi Wolfe (USA) will have two demonstrations. The first will feature pyrography, power carving and colouring with acrylic paints. The second will feature 3D carving to go “Beyond the Surface”.

Robbie Graham (Taupo) will demonstrate turning a “Toru” multi-axis piece - we may even get to see some pyrography and application of iridescent paint.

Emiliano Achaval (Hawaii) will be making a Hawaiian Calabash on Saturday and on Sunday will demonstrate a square winged offset bowl.

Rene Baxalle (Auckland) thrilled his audience last year turning with a ring tool and then showing us how to colour with oil paints. This year his demo will feature turning, carving and a little something else!

During the lunch break delegates can enjoy a light lunch and wander around the Trade Hall. Have a look at all the woodworking tools and machinery, have a chat to the staff and maybe make a purchase or two! Then you can watch one of the “How to Sessions” that will be running each day during the lunch break.

On Saturday evening we will have the Gala Dinner, an auction or two for pieces very generously donated by the demonstrators and the “Famous Crazy Smock” competition. The competition is open to all and is a load of fun.

On Sunday morning early birds can bring a piece or two of their work in for some constructive feedback from Emiliano and Andi. Even if you don’t have a piece, this is worth getting up for!

Throughout the event there will be an “Art of Wood Exhibition” featuring pieces from the 2025 Art of Wood Competition on display in the Trade Hall. And of course there will be a couple of raffles.
